Six class levels are offered. The first three lay a strong aural and sensory-motor foundation for musicality. This also serves as an excellent foundation for cognitive, emotional, social and physical development. The final three classes are a sequential curriculum leading to musical literacy, i.e., “the ability to see what you hear, and hear what you see in musical notation”.
Family Music with Baby is a 30 min class for Parent and infant up to 18 months. Adult learns lullabies, bounces rhymes, echoes and other music/movement activities to awake the infant’s curiosity about music. Babies absorb everything, learning the language of music as they learn to talk! A foundation is laid for beat awareness, vocal production and aural discrimination. The materials packet includes a parent handbook and companion CD, a woven pouch containing rhythm sticks, a rattle and a scarf.
Family Music for Toddlers is a 40-minute class designed the joy of musical movement to 1 ½ to 3year old and their caregivers, while developing musical skills. Adult and child explore music through singing, focused listening, moving, echoing rhythmic and melodic patterns and playing simple percussion instruments. The material packet includes a family songbook, child’s instrument and companion CD.
A Musical Celebration of the Year for Young Children, ages 3-5, is a 45-minute class with caregiver. Activities nurture musical, as well as overall development and include singing, beat/rhythm activities, movement exploration, listening, poems, stories and playing instruments. Musical concepts, such as rhythmic and melodic patterns, tempo, dynamics and timbre are experienced in many ways. Child receives two home packets during the year each of which includes a parent book, 2 CDs and 8 animal listening game cards.
Musikgarten’s Music Makers at Home in the World is a 60 minute class for children at least 4 1/2 years old. Each class ends with a 15- minute family sharing time. This level initiates a four year sequential curriculum. Musical concepts are explored through singing and vocal development, playing instrument, moving, listening and creating. Musical skills evolve through performing, writing and reading musical patterns, instrumental ensemble work, and a focus on the orchestral families of instruments. Materials per semester: 2 packets, each containing a parent booklet, CD, notation cards, nature-theme pictures and instrument posters.
Musikgarten’s Music Makers Around the World is a 70 minute class for children ages 5 to 7. Each class ends with a 15- minute family sharing time. This class continues sequential music learning within the context of world cultures. New concepts include reading and playing whole songs, I and V7 chords, syncopation, Orff ensembles, folk dances and celebrations from around the world. Materials per semester: 2 packets, each containing a parent booklet, CD, notation cards, nature-theme pictures and instrument posters.
Musikgarten’s Music Makers at the Keyboard is a three year program of 75 minute lessons for children that prepares ages 7 to 9 who have no previous Musikgarten experience for individual piano lessons. Classes include playing the piano, singing, drumming, ensemble playing, reading and writing music and creating by composing and improvising with learned patterns. Each semester’s materials are a piano book, a listening CD and a practice CD. Each class ends with a 15 minute participation time.
